Seal Snorkeling in Sydney: Worth It?

Seal snorkeling near Sydney usually means a boat trip down the coast to rocky islands or seal colonies, most commonly around Montague Island or similar spots a few hours south. Expect to spend a couple of hours in the water with Australian fur seals that are playful, fast, and will often swim right up to you. The experience is more about the seals coming to investigate you than calm reef snorkeling. Water is cold even in summer (bring a good wetsuit), visibility varies from 5 to 15 meters, and you’ll likely see some fish and maybe rays but the seals are the main event. Trips run as day tours from Sydney with travel time eating into the day.

Best time is December to April when the water is warmest and seal activity is high. Expect to pay around $250–$450 per person depending on whether it’s a basic snorkel trip or one that includes transport, lunch and extra activities like a short scuba option. Summer weekends book up fast.

Tip: choose a smaller group tour if you can; the seals behave more naturally and you get more time in the water. Skip combining it with whale watching in the same trip if you want decent time actually snorkeling with the seals instead of just cruising past them. Bring your own mask if you have one that fits well – rental gear is average.
