Seaplane Tours in Seattle: Worth It?

A seaplane tour gives you the classic “arrive like it’s 1955” experience: you board a small floatplane on Lake Union, take off from the water, and circle the city for 20–30 minutes. You’ll see the Space Needle, downtown skyline, Lake Washington, and Mount Rainier on clear days. The cabin is tight (usually 4–6 passengers), loud, and vibrates a lot, but the views from 1,500–2,000 feet are genuinely spectacular. Expect some engine noise and a bit of chop on windy days; it’s not a luxury helicopter ride. Most flights depart from Lake Union and stay over water or urban areas the entire time.

Best time is June through early September when the weather is most reliable and the odds of seeing Rainier are highest. Shoulder months (May and late September) can be cheaper and less crowded but bring a higher chance of low clouds or fog that cancel or reroute the flight. Expect to pay around $150–$250 per person for a standard 20–30 minute tour; longer scenic flights or private charters run $350–$600.

Tip: book a morning slot for smoother air and better light. Skip the cheapest ultra-short “taster” flights; they barely get you high enough to see anything worthwhile. If the forecast is iffy, reschedule—half the magic is clear visibility.
