Sforza Castle is a solid choice if you like mixing history, art, and a quick escape from Milan's crowded streets. The courtyards and ramparts are free to wander and give you a feel for the scale of a proper Renaissance fortress. Inside, several small museums cover everything from medieval weapons to Michelangelo's last sculpture. Expect a half-day visit at most: the whole complex is manageable, but the museums are dense rather than spectacular. It's rarely empty but far calmer than the Duomo area, especially on weekday mornings.
Best time is spring or early fall when the weather lets you enjoy the grounds without sweating or freezing. Summer gets hot and crowded; winter is fine if you're okay with short days. Expect to pay around €5-12 total per person depending on which museums you enter and whether you add a guided tour. A basic ticket for all museums is cheap; a decent group tour adds noticeably more but saves you from wandering aimlessly through rooms of armor.
Pick the Michelangelo Pietà Rondanini and the frescoed rooms if time is short; skip the less compelling decorative arts sections unless you're into furniture history. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes; the stone floors and stairs add up quickly.
