Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Guide

The Globe is a faithful reconstruction of Shakespeare's original open-air theatre. Expect a wooden O-shaped building with a thrust stage, no roof over the yard, and three levels of seating. Groundlings stand in the yard exactly as they did in 1600; it's immersive but you’ll be on your feet for 2–3 hours. The shows are performed in daylight or with natural light, using original practices—no microphones, minimal sets, and actors who talk directly to the audience. It’s rowdy, funny, and very alive. If you love Shakespeare even a little, it’s one of the most distinctive theatre experiences in London.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the weather is decent and the theatre operates at full schedule. Avoid January and February when it’s mostly closed or doing limited indoor shows at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse next door. Expect to pay around £25–£65 for seats depending on how close you want to be and how popular the play is; standing tickets in the yard usually start from the low £20s. Standing is cheaper but genuinely tiring—pick it only if you’re young, fit, and don’t mind rain.

Honest tip: book a seat in the middle gallery if it’s in your budget; you get a good view, somewhere to lean, and shelter if it rains. Skip the guided tour unless you have a serious interest in Elizabethan architecture—the theatre itself during a performance is far more enjoyable than walking around empty benches.
