Shinjuku Gyoen Garden: Worth Visiting?

Shinjuku Gyoen is a large, peaceful park right next to the chaos of Shinjuku station. It mixes three garden styles: traditional Japanese with ponds and pruned trees, a formal French section with roses and symmetry, and a relaxed English landscape area. Expect wide lawns, a modest greenhouse with tropical plants, and a few teahouses where you can sit. It's popular with locals for quiet walks or picnics but never feels overcrowded like some temples. The whole place takes 1–2 hours at a comfortable pace; it's flat and easy to stroll.

Best time is spring for cherry blossoms (late March–early April) or autumn for colorful leaves (mid-November). Summer can be hot and humid, winter is quiet but the trees are bare. Entry is cheap—expect to pay around $5–10 per adult. Guided walking tours add $30–70 depending on group size and length if you want context.

Tip: rent a picnic blanket and grab takeout near the station instead of eating at the overpriced garden café. Skip the greenhouse if you're short on time—it's nice but the outdoor areas are the real highlight. Go early morning to avoid school groups on weekdays.
