Ski Day Trip from Santiago: What to Know

A day trip from Santiago to the Andes for skiing is totally doable but feels rushed. You'll leave the city around 7-8am, climb to around 3000m, and have roughly 5-6 hours on the slopes before heading back. Traffic can add an hour each way on weekends. The resorts offer decent groomed runs, reliable lifts, and decent rental gear, but the experience is more "quick hit" than full mountain immersion. Expect cold, dry Andean conditions with strong sun at altitude; UV is no joke. It's a practical option if your schedule is tight and you just want to say you skied in Chile.

Best time is mid-June to early September, with July and August offering the most reliable snow. Expect to pay around $150-280 per person for transport, lift ticket, and basic rentals; add another $80-150 if you want a lesson. Food and drinks on the mountain are overpriced.

Tip: Skip the big group tours if you can and arrange a private transfer or rent a car instead; you'll gain at least two extra hours of skiing time. If you're a beginner, take a morning lesson; if you're intermediate or better, head straight to the upper lifts and avoid the crowded lower slopes near the drop-off area.
