Snorkeling Shell Island in Panama City Beach

Shell Island is a low-key barrier island across from Panama City Beach known for shallow, clear water, decent snorkeling around grass beds, and a long stretch of shell-covered sand. Expect a slow boat ride out (20-40 minutes), then roughly an hour split between wading and snorkeling plus time to walk the beach hunting for shells. The water is usually calm but can get murky after rain or heavy boat traffic. You'll see small fish, maybe a few rays or dolphins if you're lucky, but it's not a world-class reef experience. It's relaxing rather than thrilling, perfect if you want a half-day on the water without heavy exertion.

Best time is late spring through early fall (May to September) when the water is warmest and visibility is typically better. Summer brings more crowds and afternoon thunderstorms, so morning trips are smarter. Expect to pay around $35-65 per person for a basic half-day tour including gear and the boat ride; add a few bucks for drinks or a full-day option. Private charters run higher.

Tip: Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one that fits well; rental gear is often average. Skip the shell-collecting bag upsells and just enjoy the hunt. Wear reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes; the shells can be sharp underfoot.
