A snorkeling day trip from Panama City usually means 10–14 hours on a boat with 10–25 other travelers. You’ll motor an hour or two to either the islands near Portobelo (Caribbean side) or Taboga Island (Pacific side). Expect warm, shallow water, decent visibility when conditions are right, and a mix of colorful reef fish, small rays, and occasional turtles. The Caribbean trips tend to feel more “tropical postcard” with multiple stops at tiny islands and a lunch on a beach; the Pacific option is shorter but can be choppier and the reefs are less vibrant. It’s a solid, low-effort way to see something besides the city, but it’s not world-class snorkeling.
Best time is December through April when seas are calmer and visibility is better; June–November often brings rain, swells, and cancellations. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person including snorkel gear, lunch, and transport. The cheaper end is usually the big-group Taboga catamaran; the higher end gets you smaller boats and the Portobelo/San Blas area.
Pick the Caribbean 4-island tour if you want better snorkeling and a full day out; skip the all-you-can-drink party catamaran if you actually care about seeing fish instead of floating bars. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a waterproof phone case, and cash for tips—the boats rarely have shade for the whole trip so a hat and rash guard are smart too.
