San Blas Islands Day Trip from Panama City

A San Blas day trip from Panama City is a long but rewarding excursion. You’ll spend about 2.5–3 hours each way on the road (the last stretch is rough dirt track), then boat between three or four islands. Expect beautiful clear water, decent snorkeling on shallow reefs, a shipwreck swim stop, and time on small sandy islands where Kuna families sell coconuts, lobster lunches, and basic souvenirs. It’s not remote wilderness — these islands see plenty of day-trippers — but the water and scenery are genuinely stunning. The trip usually includes snorkel gear, kayaks on some boats, lunch, and transport. You’ll be back in the city around 6–7 pm.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and rain is less likely. June–November can be rougher with bigger swells and cancelled trips. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person depending on group size and whether you go with a smaller operator or larger bus groups. Private or semi-private options cost more but give you more space and flexibility.

Tip: choose the tour that visits four islands and includes the shipwreck — it’s noticeably better than the three-island versions. Skip the lobster upgrade if you’re on a budget; the standard lunch is usually plenty and the upsell isn’t worth it. Bring cash for souvenirs and tips, wear reef-safe sunscreen, and don’t expect five-star comfort — this is a full day in a boat with basic facilities.
