Snorkeling Trips from Panama City

Most snorkeling trips from Panama City head to either the Caribbean side near Portobelo or require a flight or long drive to the San Blas islands. Expect a full-day commitment: early departure, boat rides that can get choppy, and 2–3 snorkel stops over reefs that range from decent to very good depending on recent weather and currents. Visibility is typically 10–20 meters; you’ll see colorful corals, parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional ray or turtle. The San Blas trips involve more travel time but usually deliver clearer water and healthier reefs. Caribbean-side tours are quicker to reach but can feel more crowded and the marine life is patchier.

Best time is the dry season from December to April when seas are calmer and visibility is highest. June–November brings more rain, rougher water, and frequent cancellations. Expect to pay around $130–$220 per person for an all-inclusive day trip that covers transport, basic snorkel gear, lunch, and a guide. Private or smaller-group options push toward the higher end.

Pick the Caribbean-side tour if you want to keep it simple and affordable; skip it if you’re hoping for postcard-perfect water. For the best experience, pay a bit more for the San Blas trip but only if you don’t get seasick easily—the boat ride can be long and bouncy. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; rental gear is often well-used.
