Snorkeling with Turtles in the Maldives

Expect a genuinely special half-day trip: you’ll spend most of the time in shallow, clear lagoon water drifting above reefs while green sea turtles graze on seagrass or swim past you. The experience is relaxed rather than adrenaline-filled. Trips usually visit two or three sites; the first is often a drift snorkel over a house reef where turtles are common, the second a shallower turtle “cleaning station.” Visibility is typically excellent (15–30 m), water is warm (27–30 °C), and you don’t need to be an expert swimmer. Boats carry 8–20 people; mornings are calmer and less crowded than afternoons.

Best time is December to April when seas are flattest and visibility is highest, though turtles are present year-round. June to November can still be good but expect occasional rain and choppier rides. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person for a standard half-day group tour including gear, guide, and bottled water. Private or luxury-resort excursions run $120–250. Choose smaller operator trips that limit group size to 10–12 and include a marine guide who points things out without crowding the animals. Skip the ultra-cheap trips that pack 25 people onto one boat and rush between sites; they stress both you and the turtles.
