Stand Up Paddleboarding in the Maldives: What to Know

Expect calm, clear water over shallow reefs or lagoons, with easy paddling that lets you spot fish, rays, and turtles below. Most sessions are guided group tours from resort islands or local atolls, lasting 1.5–3 hours. It’s relaxed rather than athletic – perfect for beginners, though stronger winds or currents can appear in open channels. The water is warm enough that you rarely need a wetsuit, but you’ll get sunburned fast if you skip sunscreen.

The best time is December to April when the northeast monsoon brings flat seas and reliable sunshine. June to October is windier and wetter, making paddling harder and visibility poorer. Expect to pay around $45–$90 for a standard half-day guided session including equipment and transfer; longer or private trips push toward $120–$180. Resort prices sit at the higher end, while local island operators are usually cheaper.

Pick a morning tour when the water is glassiest and light is best for seeing marine life. Skip the big-group sunset trips if you actually want to paddle hard – they tend to become photo stops with drinks. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard; the rental boards are usually fine but the provided sunscreen is often inadequate.
