Should You Do a Turtle Tour in the Maldives?

A typical turtle tour is a half-day boat trip that takes you to one or two shallow reef spots where green sea turtles regularly feed. Expect 30–60 minutes in the water per site, plus travel time. The experience is snorkeling rather than diving: you’ll drift above coral gardens and suddenly spot turtles munching on seagrass. Groups are usually 8–15 people. The water is warm and calm most of the year, but you’ll still get splashed and need to be comfortable swimming away from the boat. Guides point out turtles and occasionally reef sharks or rays, but the main event is simply sharing the water with the turtles. It’s genuinely peaceful when the group spreads out.

Best time is December to April when seas are flattest and visibility often exceeds 20 meters. June to October can still work but expect more swell, rain showers, and lower visibility. Expect to pay around $60–$130 per person depending on whether it’s a small local boat from Maafushi or a faster resort-linked trip. Cheaper options often include fewer stops and larger groups.

Tip: choose a morning departure; turtles are more active and the light is better for photos. Skip the tours that also promise dolphins or mantas in the same half-day; they usually deliver mediocre versions of everything. Bring your own snorkel gear if you’re fussy about fit; rental sets are well-used.
