Stand Up Paddleboarding in Bali: What to Know

Expect calm, mostly flat water with some gentle currents, especially on river tours or protected bays. Coastal SUP gives you views of cliffs and temples but can get choppy if the wind picks up; river paddling is more relaxing and scenic with jungle on both sides. Most tours last 2–3 hours including transport and basic instruction. It’s beginner-friendly if you have decent balance, though first-timers often spend time climbing back on the board. Water is warm, so no wetsuit needed, but bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard.

The dry season from May to September offers the best conditions with lighter winds and less rain. June–August is peak and most reliable. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person depending on whether it’s a basic coastal rental, a guided river trip, or a sunset session with snacks. Private lessons or longer tours sit at the higher end.

Pick a river paddle on the Ayung if you want something peaceful and shaded. Skip the crowded beach SUP spots in Seminyak or Kuta unless you enjoy fighting jet skis and tourists. Go in the morning when the sea is usually flattest and you avoid the afternoon heat.
