Edinburgh Street Art Tour: Worth It?

Edinburgh's street art scene is concentrated in a few pockets—mainly the Cowgate, Grassmarket, and parts of Leith. A typical tour lasts 90 minutes to two hours and takes you through alleys and underpasses to see everything from huge murals and political pieces to smaller tags and stencils. Expect a mix of history, artist stories, and context about how the scene has grown. It's a good way to see parts of the city most tourists miss, though some spots feel more like graffiti than gallery-level work. The experience is very walk-heavy on uneven cobblestones, so wear decent shoes.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the weather is more reliable and you won't be standing in the rain staring at a damp wall. Summer tours can get crowded with festival visitors. Expect to pay around £15–£35 per person depending on whether it's a small group tour or a private one. Free self-guided options exist but lack the background that makes most of the art interesting.

Tip: choose a tour that focuses on Leith if you want to see the strongest concentration of large-scale, high-quality pieces—skip the ones that spend too much time in the Old Town where the ratio of interesting art to filler is lower. Go in the morning if you can; the light is better for photos and the groups are smaller.
