SUP Paddleboarding in Helsinki: What to Know

Expect calm, protected waters dotted with small islands and granite shores. Most tours take you into the nearby archipelago where you paddle at a relaxed pace, stop for a swim, and get a proper sense of the Finnish summer landscape. The experience is gentle rather than athletic – more sightseeing on water than a workout. Water is usually clear and cold; air temperature in summer is pleasant but can drop quickly if the wind picks up. Groups are small and guides handle logistics so you don’t need prior SUP experience.

Best time is mid-June to late August when water temperatures are highest and daylight lasts until almost midnight. July is peak season and most reliable for warm weather; shoulder months can be beautiful but expect cooler water and the chance of rain. Expect to pay around €55–85 for a 2–3 hour guided trip including equipment and transfer from central Helsinki. Longer half-day options with a forest walk and picnic run closer to €110–140.

Pick a tour that goes to the outer islands rather than staying in the busy central harbor – the difference in peace and scenery is huge. Skip anything advertised as a “sunset yoga paddle” unless you actually want more yoga than paddling; the light is nice but the experience is often rushed and crowded.
