Bali's south-west coast, especially around Canggu and Kuta, offers gentle beach breaks ideal for beginners. A typical lesson lasts 1.5–2 hours and includes a short theory session on the sand followed by plenty of time in the water. Expect small, consistent waves (usually 1–2 meters), patient instructors who push your board and give constant feedback, and groups of 3–6 people unless you pay for private. After two or three sessions most people can catch and ride whitewater on their own. The water is warm, the sand is soft, but the sun is fierce and the beaches can get crowded by mid-morning.
The dry season (May–September) brings the most consistent, smaller waves and fewer rain interruptions – July and August are peak. Expect to pay around $35–65 for a group lesson including board and rash guard; private lessons run $70–110. Longer packages drop the per-lesson price noticeably. Skip the cheapest $13 “lessons” that are basically photo ops with 15 people in the water. Book a small-group session with an instructor who speaks clear English and offers a quick video review at the end – it speeds up learning more than you’d think. Avoid trying to combine a first lesson with a scooter rental on the same day; traffic and fatigue don’t mix well.
