Surfing Lessons in Bali: What You Need to Know

Expect a fun but tiring couple of hours. Most beginner lessons last 90 minutes to two hours and include a quick beach tutorial on paddling, popping up, and basic wave timing before you get in the water. Waves in Bali are generally gentle and consistent for new surfers, especially at spots like Kuta or Canggu, but you'll still spend more time falling than riding. Instructors are usually patient and will push your board at the right moment so you get the feel of catching a wave. After two hours you'll be wiped, sunburned if you're not careful, and probably smiling.

The dry season (May to September) brings the most consistent small waves and better weather. Avoid the wet season (December to March) unless you don't mind rain and bigger swells. Expect to pay around $35–65 for a private 2-hour lesson including board and rash guard. Group lessons are cheaper but you'll get less attention. Skip the huge group packages sold on the beach in Kuta; they're often rushed and the instructors are stretched thin. Book a private or semi-private lesson instead – the difference in how much you actually learn is huge.
