Surfing Lessons in Lima: What to Know

Lima offers surprisingly consistent waves for beginners right in the city, mainly at beaches like Makaha in Miraflores. A typical lesson lasts 90 minutes to two hours and includes a short beach briefing on paddling, popping up, and balance, followed by time in the water with an instructor. Expect small, gentle waves ideal for first-timers; the water is cool year-round so you'll get a wetsuit. Groups are common but rarely overwhelming if you book a small class. It's a solid half-day activity that combines decent exercise with views of the coastline.

The best time is December to March when water is slightly warmer and swells are more predictable, though lessons run year-round. Expect to pay around $35–65 per person for a group lesson including board and wetsuit; private sessions run higher. Book something in the morning for calmer conditions and fewer crowds.

Tip: Choose a small-group or private lesson if you actually want to improve – the big 20-person classes are mostly babysitting. Skip packages that bundle transport or photos unless you really need them; they're rarely worth the markup. Focus on fundamentals and you'll stand up on your first or second day.
