Should You Visit a Zurich Bathhouse?

Zurich's outdoor bathhouses (Badi) are simple wooden structures built over the river or lake where locals swim, sunbathe, and relax. Expect mixed or single-sex options, cold water straight from the Limmat or Lake Zurich, basic changing areas, and a very Swiss no-nonsense atmosphere. Most have sun decks, ladders into the water, and sometimes a sauna or small café. It's not a luxury spa; it's more like a public pool without the chlorine, surrounded by city views. Crowds vary hugely: quiet weekday mornings versus packed sunny weekends.

Best time is June to early September when the water warms up enough for comfortable swimming (around 20-24°C). Early morning or late afternoon avoids the worst crowds. Expect to pay around 8-15 CHF for a standard adult entry; some places charge a bit more for sauna access or rentals like towels and lockers. It's cheap for the experience and location.

Pick the women-only spots if you want peace and fewer stares; they're often the most pleasant. Skip anything with a big party vibe on hot weekends unless you enjoy crowds and loud music. Bring your own towel and flip-flops, and remember most places close by 8 or 9pm even in summer.
