High tea at the Taj Mahal Palace is a civilized, old-school colonial-style experience with tiered stands of delicate sandwiches, scones, pastries, and proper loose-leaf tea served in a grand, high-ceilinged room overlooking the Gateway of India. Expect starched tablecloths, live piano or harp music, and a mix of well-dressed locals, expats, and travelers. It’s more about the atmosphere and ritual than mind-blowing food; the savories are usually decent but the sweets can be hit-or-miss. The whole thing lasts about 90 minutes and feels like a pleasant time-warp from the city’s chaos outside.
Best time is October to early March when Mumbai weather is pleasant. Go for the later sitting (around 3:30–4 pm) so you’re not rushed. Expect to pay around ₹3500–5500 per person including taxes; it’s not cheap but includes unlimited tea and a generous spread. Book ahead, especially on weekends.
Tip: Load up on the cucumber sandwiches, smoked salmon, and warm scones with clotted cream—they’re the strongest part of the menu. Skip most of the Indian sweets unless you have a serious sugar craving; they’re often too sweet and not as fresh. If you want the full experience without committing to the priciest option, the Sea Lounge setting is classic and slightly less formal than the main Palace lobby.
