TeamLab Digital Art in Tokyo: Worth It?

TeamLab offers two main immersive digital art experiences in Tokyo: Planets and Borderless. Planets is the more physical one—you walk barefoot through water, wade in knee-deep pools, and interact with projections that respond to your movement. It's sensory and Instagram-friendly but can feel crowded and wet. Borderless is a larger, looping maze of rooms with shifting light sculptures, flowers blooming on walls, and optical illusions. Both are genuinely impressive in scale and technology, but expect slow-moving crowds, especially in the most photogenic spots. The experiences last 60-90 minutes once inside.

Go in winter (Dec-Feb) or on weekday mornings for thinner crowds and better flow. Summer gets hot and sticky, especially at Planets with the water elements. Expect to pay around $35-55 per person depending on which one you choose and whether you book timed entry in advance. Combo tickets or evening slots usually sit at the higher end.

Pick Planets if you want something tactile and memorable; skip the attached digital museum unless you're a big fan—it's less impactful. Book timed tickets ahead or you'll waste time in long standby lines. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a bit damp for Planets, and leave your good socks at the hotel.
