Uluwatu Temple sits on a dramatic cliff above the Indian Ocean in southern Bali. Expect steep stone staircases, cheeky monkeys that will steal anything loose, and sweeping ocean views. The temple itself is compact and atmospheric, but most people come for the sunset Kecak dance performance held on the cliff edge. It gets crowded, especially near the stage and main viewpoints. The whole visit takes 1.5–3 hours depending on whether you stay for the show. Dress modestly – shoulders and knees covered – and wear comfortable shoes for the uneven paths.
Best time to visit is the dry season (May–October) when rain is less likely to ruin the sunset. Even then, arrive early if you want breathing room. Expect to pay around $5–15 per person for entry and the dance show combined; add transport if you’re not on a scooter. A half-day guided trip from Seminyak or Kuta usually runs $30–70 including hotel pickup.
Tip: Skip the overpriced tourist restaurants nearby and eat at one of the simple warungs on the way back toward Padang-Padang instead. If you’re short on time or hate crowds, just go for the temple and sunset on your own scooter rather than a packed group tour – the place is straightforward to visit independently.
