The self-guided audio tour narrated by former sailors is genuinely good and keeps it human rather than dry. It’s crowded but well organized; expect stairs, tight passages, and a fair amount of walking on metal decks that get hot in summer. Kids usually love it, adults interested in naval history or engineering tend to rate it highly.

Best time is spring or fall. Summer is packed with families and the flight deck turns into a sauna; winter weekdays are noticeably quieter. Expect to pay around $35–45 per adult for admission and the audio tour; kids and military discounts bring it down. Add $10–15 if you want the flight simulator or a guided tour option. Food nearby is easy but nothing special, so eat before or after.
