Valle Nevado is the biggest and highest ski area reachable in a day from Santiago. Expect a proper Andean resort with 40+ runs, decent lifts, and reliable snow from mid-June to mid-October. The terrain is mostly intermediate with some solid advanced runs and very limited beginner areas. Views are huge, the air is thin, and it can get seriously cold and windy. A typical day trip from Santiago takes about 1.5–2 hours each way; you’ll leave early and return after dark. It’s not a charming mountain village — it’s a functional ski resort with a few hotels, rental shops, and cafés at the base.
Best time is July–August for deepest snow and most reliable conditions, though that’s also peak Chilean winter break so crowds and prices spike. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person for a basic day-trip package that includes transport, lift ticket, and basic rental gear. Add food, lessons, or better equipment and you can easily hit $350+. Private transport or self-driving saves time but parking and mountain tolls add up.
Honest tips: rent gear in Santiago the day before if you can — the rental stock at the resort is older and lines are long. Skip the overpriced on-mountain restaurants and bring snacks or eat in Farellones on the way down. If you’re a strong skier wanting maximum runs, consider spending one night up there instead of doing the exhausting same-day round trip.
