A full-day trip from Nice to the Verdon Gorge takes 9–10 hours and gives you a solid taste of France’s “Grand Canyon.” Expect a long but scenic drive through Provence, stops at viewpoints high above the turquoise river (up to 700m deep), a visit to the pretty village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, and, in summer, lavender fields. The route includes photo stops at the most dramatic bends; you won’t hike into the gorge itself on standard tours. It’s a lot of coach or minibus time, but the landscape payoff is genuine if you like big nature views.
Best time is June to early September when the lavender is blooming and the weather is reliably warm. Spring gives you green hills but no purple fields; autumn can be crisp and less crowded. Expect to pay around $130–190 per person for a small-group tour from Nice, or $90–130 on larger coaches. Private tours or groups of four push toward the higher end.
Tip: choose the smaller-group minibus option if your budget allows – you see more stops and the guide can actually answer questions. Skip the big bus tours if motion sickness is an issue; the mountain roads are winding. Bring water, comfortable shoes, and a jacket even in summer – it can be 10°C cooler at the top viewpoints.
