It's a long but straightforward day: roughly 90 minutes each way from Santiago through the valley, usually stopping first in colorful Valparaíso for a couple of hours to walk the hills and see the street art, then continuing to Viña del Mar for the beach, gardens, and relaxed coastal vibe. Expect a mix of walking on uneven streets, some time on the sand or promenade, and a lot of bus time. The Pacific looks dramatic but it's usually too cold for swimming. The whole trip runs about 9-11 hours door-to-door. Best done in spring (Sept-Nov) or early fall (March-April) when it's milder and less crowded than peak summer; winter can be gray and windy.
Expect to pay around $80-140 per person for a standard group tour including transport, guide, and basic tastings or entry fees. Private tours or ones with nicer lunch run $180-250. One solid tip: choose the version that spends more time in Valparaíso and keeps Viña lighter — the port city has far more character. Skip the casino and overpriced tourist traps in Viña; grab an empanada or simple seafood lunch instead. Bring layers, good walking shoes, and sunscreen. It's a decent add-on if you have 2-3 extra days in Santiago but not essential if your time is tight.
