Kayaking the Vltava River in Prague

Paddling the Vltava gives you a completely different view of Prague. Most people stick to the touristy stretch between the Charles Bridge and the National Theatre, where you glide under famous bridges with castle views. The water is usually calm and the current mild, so it's suitable for beginners. Expect a mix of relaxed drifting, occasional rowing, and dodging swans and rental boats. Longer trips head north or south into greener, quieter sections with trees and occasional weirs; these feel more like a proper day on the river but require transport to the put-in point.

The best time is May through September when the weather is warmest and days are long. June to August gets crowded on weekends; shoulder months (May, September) are calmer and more pleasant. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person for a basic 2–3 hour rental or guided trip in the city center. Full-day excursions with transport and equipment run $70–110. A good tip: choose the longer green southern route if you want peace and scenery; skip the short central loop on summer weekends unless you enjoy weaving through paddleboard traffic. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and wear quick-dry clothes—wet feet are guaranteed.
