Expect a very early start (usually 2-3am pickup) whether you choose the classic Mount Batur sunrise hike or a jeep-assisted version. The trail itself is a mix of dirt, loose rock, and moderate steep sections that take 1.5-2 hours to the rim. At the top you'll get sweeping views over the caldera and lake if the clouds cooperate; sunrise can be spectacular but is often hazy. After the summit you usually descend to visit the black lava fields or have breakfast. The whole trip takes 5-7 hours door-to-door. It's not a hard hike, but it is steep enough in places that decent fitness helps, especially in the dark.
Best time is the dry season (May-October) when rain is rare and visibility is better. November-April is wetter and the summit is frequently socked in with cloud. Expect to pay around $45-90 per person depending on whether you go with a big group, small tour, or private guide and whether transport, breakfast, and park fees are included. Jeep sunrise options sit at the higher end.
Pick the straightforward sunrise hike if you want the real experience; skip the add-on "hot spring tour" afterward unless you actually want a crowded, average soak. Bring a headlamp, wear proper hiking shoes (flip-flops are a bad idea), and don't overpay for photos at the top.
