Auckland sits on over 50 volcanoes, most of them extinct and surprisingly gentle. A typical half-day tour takes you to three or four sites including Mt Wellington (Maungakiekie) and Mangere Mountain. Expect short, easy walks up crater rims and across lava fields, decent views over the city and harbours, and a guide explaining Maori history and basic geology. It's more educational stroll than adventure hike; you'll be back in the city by early afternoon. The experience is pleasant rather than spectacular unless you're genuinely into volcanoes or Maori pa sites.
Best time is summer (Dec-Feb) for long days and reliable weather, though shoulder months (Oct-Nov, Mar-Apr) are quieter and still mild. Avoid winter if you don't like cold wind on exposed crater tops. Expect to pay around NZ$150-220 per person for a small-group half-day tour including pickup. Private tours push closer to $400+ for two people.
Pick a morning tour that includes both Mt Wellington and Mangere Mountain; the harbour views from the latter are noticeably better. Skip the add-on "volcano espresso" stops or any tour that promises to visit Rangitoto unless you specifically want the ferry ride and longer hike; it's a different experience and eats up a full day.
