Expect a classic aquarium experience with a few standout moments. You walk through a transparent tunnel while fish, rays, and sharks glide overhead and around you. There's a decent penguin colony you can view from above and below, plus some hands-on exhibits with starfish and small rays. The whole visit takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on crowds. It's well laid out but not enormous; after the tunnel and penguins the novelty wears off fairly quickly. It's genuinely good for families and anyone who likes marine life without getting on a boat.
Best time is weekdays in the shoulder seasons (March–May or September–November) when it's quieter. Summer weekends get packed and the tunnel can feel like a conveyor belt. Expect to pay around NZ$45–65 for a standard adult ticket; combos with other Auckland attractions push it toward $80–110. Kids are roughly half price.
Pick the shark tunnel and penguin area; skip the cinema show unless it's raining. Arrive at opening if you can – the light is better for photos and you avoid the worst of the tour groups. If you're prone to motion sickness, note the moving walkway in the tunnel is surprisingly smooth.
