Should You Do a Waikiki Snorkel Cruise?

A Waikiki snorkel cruise is a half-day boat trip that takes you a few miles off Waikiki to calmer waters for snorkeling, usually at two spots. Expect a catamaran or similar boat with 20-50 other people, snorkel gear, a basic lunch or snacks, and a guide pointing out fish and turtles. The actual snorkeling is decent but not world-class—think colorful reef fish, the occasional sea turtle, and sometimes dolphins or flying fish on the ride. The ride itself can be bumpy if the trade winds are up. Most trips last 3–4 hours total.

Best time is April through October when the ocean is calmer and visibility is better. Winter (Nov–Mar) brings bigger swells, rougher rides, and more cancellations. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per adult depending on whether you choose a basic shared boat or a smaller, more comfortable one with better food and fewer people. Kids are usually a bit less.

Tip: Spend a little more for the smaller “deluxe” version if you want decent space and a better lunch— the cheapest tours feel pretty crowded and rushed. Skip the ones that advertise “swim with dolphins” as a guarantee; you might see them, but it’s never promised. Bring your own sunscreen, a towel, and a dry bag if you’re picky about your phone.
