Waikiki Surf Lesson Guide

Expect a 90-minute to 2-hour session that starts with 15-20 minutes of beach instruction on the sand, then you paddle out in waist-to-chest deep water. Most groups are 4-8 people with one instructor. You'll spend more time paddling and falling than actually riding waves, but catching even a few small rollers in Waikiki's gentle break feels surprisingly good. The water is warm, the crowd is mixed tourists and locals, and instructors are generally patient with beginners. Don't expect to be shredding; the goal is standing up and gliding a little.

Best time is May through September when the south swell is smaller and trade winds are lighter. Avoid winter (Dec-Feb) if you're a first-timer—the surf can get bigger and choppier. Expect to pay around $80-150 per person for a group lesson; private lessons run $200-350 for one or two people. Gear is always included.

Pick a small-group lesson (under 6 people) over the cheapest mass groups if you can swing it—you get more actual waves. Skip the add-on photos or GoPro packages unless you really want them; your instructor will usually snap a few shots anyway. Book for early morning if possible; the water is calmer and fewer people are out.
