Should You Do a Walking Tour in New Delhi?

A walking tour in New Delhi usually means two very different experiences: the chaotic, sensory-overload lanes of Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk, spice markets, temples, mosques) or the calmer, wider avenues of New Delhi with its colonial architecture and peaceful parks. Expect noise, crowds, uneven pavement, and constant offers from touts. Old Delhi tours often include a rickshaw ride through narrow alleys, street food tasting, and quick stops at historic spots. You'll cover a lot in 3-4 hours but it can feel intense in the heat and humidity. It's genuinely interesting if you like history mixed with real street life, but it's not a relaxing stroll.

The best time is October to March when temperatures are pleasant. Avoid summer (April-June) unless you enjoy 40°C+ heat, and be cautious of monsoon flooding in July-August. Expect to pay around $15-40 per person for a small-group tour; private guides cost $60-120. Food tours or those with rickshaw elements tend to be at the higher end.

Pick a half-day Old Delhi morning tour if it's your first visit – the energy is unmatched. Skip anything that promises too many “hidden gems” or long day-trips crammed into one walk; they're usually rushed. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and don't be afraid to say no to unsolicited guides on the street.
