Westminster Abbey: Worth It?

Expect a beautiful but busy Gothic church packed with 1,000 years of English history. You'll walk over poets, kings, and queens while staring at spectacular architecture, stained glass, and endless tombs. The atmosphere is reverent in some corners and tourist-heavy in others. The full visit takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on how much you read. It's impressive, but can feel like a crowded museum rather than a living church. The audio guide is solid and moves you along efficiently.

Best time to visit is spring or autumn on a weekday morning right after opening. Summers and weekends get uncomfortably crowded. Expect to pay around £25–£32 for a standard ticket; guided tours and special exhibitions push it higher. Families and students get discounts. The separate Tower and Jewel House tickets are extra if you want those.

Skip the expensive verger-led tour unless you really want access to the Confessor's Chapel. Do get the audio guide or download a decent podcast beforehand – it makes the place come alive. If you're short on time or energy, consider just attending a regular choral evensong instead (free) for the best experience of the building.
