Whale Watching in Melbourne: Worth It?

From May to October you stand a decent chance of seeing humpback and southern right whales as they migrate along the Victorian coast. The experience is usually a 3–4 hour boat trip from either Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula or Phillip Island. Expect rolling swells, cold wind, and long stretches where you’re simply scanning the horizon. When whales do appear they often breach, tail-slap or pass surprisingly close, but sightings are never guaranteed—most operators report an 80–90 % success rate in peak months (July–September). Dolphins are a reliable bonus on almost every trip.

Expect to pay around A$150–220 per adult, including a simple morning tea or lunch. Book a morning departure from Sorrento if you want the shortest drive from Melbourne and calmer bay waters; Phillip Island trips are longer but give you the option to combine with penguin viewing later. Skip the ultra-cheap no-name operators and anything promising “guaranteed” whales. Bring binoculars, wear layers plus a windproof jacket, and choose a vessel with an upper viewing deck—being able to move around and get out of the wind makes the difference between an okay trip and a memorable one.
