Whale Watching in Puerto Vallarta: What You Need to Know

From December through March you’ll find humpback whales in Banderas Bay, with January and February usually offering the most consistent sightings and calmer seas. Expect a 3- to 4-hour trip that takes you a few miles offshore where the whales breach, slap their tails, and sometimes come surprisingly close to the boat. The experience is raw: engines cut, everyone goes quiet, then suddenly a 40-ton animal launches out of the water. You won’t get the perfect Instagram shot every time, but when it happens it’s genuinely thrilling. Most tours also include some snorkeling if conditions allow, though the main event is the whales.

Expect to pay around $60–$110 per person depending on boat size, whether it includes lunch or an open bar, and how many people they cram on board. Smaller boats (12–25 passengers) give you far better views and less crowded decks; the big party boats are cheaper but feel like floating discos with engines running half the time. Skip anything under three hours or tours that promise “guaranteed” sightings—nobody can guarantee wild animals. Book a morning departure, bring binoculars and a light jacket, and choose operators that limit group size. That’s the difference between an okay tourist trip and a trip you’ll still talk about years later.
