From the old harbour in Reykjavik you can be out on the water looking for whales in under 30 minutes. Most trips last 2.5–3.5 hours and stay within Faxaflói Bay. Expect to see minke whales on roughly two-thirds of trips and humpbacks on about half; dolphins and harbour porpoises appear fairly often. The experience is more “sit on a boat scanning the horizon and occasionally get a few good looks” than constant wildlife spectacle. In winter the sea is rougher, the light is dramatic, and you’re more likely to have the boat to yourself; in summer the water is calmer and you get more daylight but far more crowds.
Expect to pay around $90–160 per adult depending on whether you choose a standard vessel or a fast rigid inflatable boat. The RIBs are quicker, drier, and get you closer to the action, but they’re also colder and you can’t move around much. Pick a morning departure if the forecast is decent; they tend to have better light and slightly calmer seas. Skip the ultra-cheap no-name operators and anything advertising “guaranteed whale sightings”—the sea doesn’t work that way. Bring binoculars, wear layers plus a windproof jacket, and don’t count on seeing blue whales; those are rare in the bay.
