Snorkeling Near Reykjavik: Worth It?

Most snorkeling tours from Reykjavik head to Silfra, a dramatic fissure in Þingvellir National Park where you float between two tectonic plates in water so clear you can see 100+ meters. Expect water temperatures around 4°C (39°F), so you'll wear a thick drysuit that keeps you surprisingly warm once you're in. The tour involves a 45-minute drive each way, a safety briefing, getting suited up, and about 30-40 minutes actually in the water. Visibility is usually stunning and the experience feels more like floating in a cold, crystal-clear river than typical ocean snorkeling. It's straightforward and safe with good guides, but it's not a place to see tropical fish—think dramatic geology, not marine life.

The best time is May to September when roads are reliable and daylight is plentiful. Summer offers calmer conditions and more tour departures. Expect to pay around $150–$220 per person including gear, transport, and a guide. Winter tours run but are more weather-dependent and slightly pricier due to fewer options.

Book the standard Silfra snorkeling tour rather than anything marketed as a combo with diving or extended activities unless you're an experienced diver. Skip trying to do this as a last-minute add-on to a busy Golden Circle day; give it its own half-day. Bring a warm change of clothes and a towel—they provide the rest.
