Harbor Seal Watching in Reykjavik

From the harbor you’ll head out for 1–2 hours looking for harbor seals on skerries and rocky outcrops. Expect to see them lounging, flopping into the water, or just staring back at you; it’s calm, low-key wildlife watching rather than a guaranteed spectacle. On a typical trip you’ll also pass seabirds and get decent views of the city and mountains. It’s relaxing rather than thrilling—perfect if you like being on the water without needing a full whale-watching commitment.

The best months are May through September when the seals are reliably hauled out and weather is more cooperative. June and July give the longest daylight and calmest seas. Expect to pay around $60–95 per adult; children are cheaper and some operators offer family rates. Shorter harbor loops are at the low end, longer ones that combine puffins or distant islands sit at the higher end.

Pick a small rigid inflatable or medium-sized boat if you want to get closer to the seals; larger tourist ferries keep more distance. Skip the trips that heavily advertise “guaranteed sightings”—seals are wild and nothing is certain. Bring binoculars, windproof layers, and snacks; the harbor cafés are easy to grab coffee from before you leave.
