Harbor Cruise in Reykjavik: Worth It?

A typical Reykjavik harbor cruise takes you out into Faxaflói Bay for 1–3 hours. You’ll see the city’s colorful rooftops receding, get decent views of the surrounding mountains, and have a solid chance of spotting seabirds, puffins (in season), and occasionally dolphins or minke whales. The ride itself is smooth on modern boats but can get choppy if the wind picks up. Expect cold even in summer—dress in layers and bring a waterproof shell. Most tours depart from the Old Harbor, which is easy to reach on foot from downtown.

The best time is May to early September when days are long and wildlife is most active. June–August gives you the best odds for puffins and midnight sun, but expect crowds. Shoulder months (May and September) are cheaper, less busy, and still offer good wildlife viewing. Expect to pay around $60–$110 for a standard sightseeing cruise; dinner cruises or longer wildlife-focused trips run $130–$220 per person.

Pick a smaller vessel (under 30 passengers) if you want better views and fewer people; larger boats are more stable but feel like floating cafeterias. Skip the ones that heavily promote a three-course dinner unless you really want a scenic meal—the food is rarely memorable and you pay a big premium. Book a morning or early-evening departure to avoid the worst wind and get softer light for photos.
