From spring through fall, especially April to November, you have a solid chance of seeing humpback whales feeding just outside the Golden Gate. Gray whales pass through during their migration in winter and early spring. Expect a 3-4 hour boat trip where you motor out past the bridge into open ocean. Most days you'll spot whales surfacing, blowing, and occasionally breaching or tail-slapping. Sea lions, harbor seals, and pelagic birds are almost guaranteed. The water is cold and the wind can be biting even when the city is sunny, so the experience feels more like a rugged wildlife expedition than a relaxing cruise. Visibility varies; fog can hide everything until you're right on top of a whale.
Expect to pay around $80–$150 per adult depending on boat size, time of year, and whether you choose a basic tour or one with naturalist guides and snacks. Smaller boats (under 30 people) give you a much better experience than the packed ones. Pick a morning departure from a Sausalito or San Francisco harbor that guarantees a marine biologist on board and has a flexible rescheduling policy for weather. Skip anything advertising “guaranteed whale sightings” or dinner cruises that tack on whale watching as an afterthought; those are usually rushed and disappointing. Dress in layers with a windproof jacket and bring binoculars if you have them.
