Wildlife Near Johannesburg: What to Know

Expect a proper bush experience about 1-2 hours’ drive from the city. You’ll do two game drives in open vehicles, looking for the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo) plus giraffe, zebra and various antelope. Sightings are never guaranteed but are usually decent; you won’t get the vast wilderness feel of Kruger, yet it’s close enough for a single day. Lunch is typically included, eaten at a viewpoint overlooking water or plains. The whole thing runs 8–9 hours door-to-door.

Best time is the dry winter months (June to September) when grass is short, animals concentrate around water, and the weather is mild. Summer brings greener landscapes and baby animals but also rain, thicker vegetation and hotter days. Expect to pay around R2,200–R3,800 per person for a decent full-day trip including transport, guiding, park fees and lunch; budget operators sit at the lower end, more exclusive lodges push toward the top.

Pick a trip that offers two proper game drives rather than one rushed one plus a sanctuary walk. Skip lion walks, cheetah petting or any “interaction” activities; they add little and often support poor welfare standards. Bring binoculars, sunscreen and a light jacket for early mornings.
