Expect a sobering few hours walking through cramped cells, solitary confinement blocks, and the stark exercise yards, then contrasting that with the light-filled Constitutional Court where the country’s democratic constitution is interpreted. The site isn’t huge but the emotional weight is heavy; most people spend 90 minutes to two and a half hours there. It’s not flashy or touristy – it’s straightforward, sometimes grim, and genuinely informative about apartheid and the transition to democracy.

Best time to visit is the cooler, drier months from May to August when Johannesburg weather is pleasant for walking outdoors. Avoid midday in December–February when it can be scorching. Expect to pay around $15–35 for a standard site ticket and self-guided or basic tour; guided experiences that bundle it with the Apartheid Museum or Soweto usually run $150–220 per person depending on group size and inclusions. The court building itself is free to enter if court is not in session.

Pick the shorter “Highlights” tour if you only have half a day – it covers the key stories without dragging. Skip the full-day combo ticket if you’re short on energy; the prison alone is intense enough. Go early in the day when it’s quieter and the guides are freshest.
