Expect a half-day trip that mixes genuine conservation work with tourist-friendly viewing. At the elephant orphanage you'll watch baby elephants being bottle-fed and playing in the mud, followed by a short talk on rescue and rehabilitation. The giraffe centre lets you hand-feed Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform. Both places are well-run and feel purposeful rather than circus-like, but they are popular so crowds are normal. The experience is better if you go early and stay focused on the animals rather than trying to get the perfect selfie.
The dry season (June to October, and January to February) is easiest for travel and animal viewing, though the orphanage feeds happen daily year-round. Expect to pay around $80–150 per person for a guided half-day tour including both sites and transport from central Nairobi; entrance-only tickets are cheaper if you're comfortable arranging your own taxi. Private tours cost more but let you avoid the big groups.
Pick the morning orphanage visit when the babies are most active and skip the gift shop upsell afterward. Bring binoculars if you have them; the afternoon giraffe feeding can get very busy with tour buses. Wear closed shoes and sunscreen—both sites involve standing in open dusty areas.
