Winter Ice Swimming in Helsinki: What to Know

Ice swimming in Helsinki is exactly what it sounds like: you plunge into a hole cut in the frozen Baltic Sea, usually for 30–90 seconds, then warm up in a sauna. The water hovers around 0–4°C; the shock is real but brief. Most people do a few short dips with sauna breaks in between. The whole session lasts 2.5–3.5 hours including changing, briefing, and multiple rounds. Expect the cold to take your breath away at first, then a strong endorphin rush once you’re back in the heat. It’s invigorating rather than relaxing – think intense contrast therapy with a side of bragging rights.

The best time is January to early March when the ice is reliably thick and the sea is properly frozen. December and late March can be hit-or-miss depending on the winter. Expect to pay around €110–€180 per person for a guided small-group experience that includes sauna, gear, and safety supervision. Private sessions run higher. Guided tours are the safest and easiest choice for visitors.

Pick a session that includes proper ice-cutting and a warm changing area; skip anything that looks like a big tourist cattle call with 20+ people. Bring a wool hat, neoprene socks if offered, and a shot of something strong afterward – you’ll want it. The experience is safe when done right, but listen to the instructors and never swim alone.
