Kayaking the Yarkon River in Tel Aviv

The Yarkon River kayak trip is a relaxed paddle through central Tel Aviv’s main green space. You’ll spend about 90 minutes on calm, mostly flat water flanked by parkland, trees, and some surprisingly green stretches that make you forget you’re in a dense city. It’s not a wilderness adventure — you’ll see joggers, bridges, and buildings in the distance — but it’s a genuinely pleasant way to get on the water without leaving town. The current is gentle, the kayaks are stable sit-on-tops, and no previous experience is needed. Expect a mix of open water and narrower sections with some light vegetation.

Best time is spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November) when it’s warm but not brutally hot and the sun isn’t punishing. Summer paddles are possible but feel like a sauna; winter can be surprisingly nice on sunny days. Expect to pay around $35–55 per person for a standard guided or self-guided rental including kayak, paddle, and life jacket. Solo kayaks cost more than tandems.

Tip: Choose the longer upstream route if available — it’s quieter and more scenic than the short loop near the lake. Skip the pedal boats on the lake itself; they’re slow, crowded, and far less enjoyable than an actual kayak on the river.
