Expect a solid, well-kept zoo with natural-looking enclosures spread across a hilly site. It’s big enough that you’ll easily spend 4–5 hours if you want to see everything at a relaxed pace. Animals are the usual mix—elephants, big cats, penguins, monkeys—plus a few more unusual Swiss-native species. The hilly terrain means a fair amount of walking and some steep paths, so wear decent shoes. Crowds are manageable on weekdays but can feel busy on sunny weekends.
Best time to go is late spring through early fall (May–September) when the weather is decent and most animals are active outdoors. In winter many outdoor exhibits are quieter and some indoor areas get crowded. Expect to pay around CHF 25–35 per adult ticket; kids are roughly half price and family tickets bring the per-person cost down a bit. Add CHF 10–15 for food and drink inside if you stay the whole day.
Tip: Get there right at opening if you can—animals are more active and you beat the midday crowds. Skip the souvenir shop near the exit and the overpriced cafeteria; pack a picnic instead and eat it in the grassy area by the playground. The tram ride from central Zurich is easy and part of the fun.
