Uetliberg Cable Car: Worth It?

The Uetliberg cable car is an unattended, automated gondola that runs between Felsenegg and Adliswil at the base. Most people ride it after hiking or taking the train up to Uetliberg for the views, then descend this way instead of walking the full way down. The ride itself lasts only a few minutes but gives you a smooth, quiet glide above the forest with decent views of the valley and, on clear days, the Alps. It’s not a thrill ride, just efficient transport that saves your knees and about an hour of downhill trekking. Expect to pay around CHF 8–12 one way if buying a single ticket; the ride is included in the Zurich Card or a day pass, which is the smartest way to do it.

Best time is late afternoon in clear weather during spring or autumn—fewer crowds than summer weekends and better light for photos without the midday haze. Skip the cable car if you actually enjoy hiking downhill; the forest path from Uetliberg is pleasant. Do take it if you’re short on time or energy, or want to combine it with the Planet Trail walk between Felsenegg and Uetliberg. Honest tip: buy the day pass in advance and ride up by train, walk the ridge, then take the cable car down—it’s the most efficient and least crowded sequence.
