Is the Manila Zoo Worth Visiting?

A visit to the Manila Zoo is a low-key, very local experience. Expect a modest, somewhat dated city zoo with a limited collection of animals – think crocodiles, monkeys, birds, a few big cats, and some Philippine endemics. It's not a world-class wildlife park; many enclosures are small and old-fashioned. The site is compact enough to walk in under two hours. Families with young children tend to enjoy it most because of the small petting area where kids can touch a few tame animals. For adults without kids it can feel underwhelming unless you just want a quick nature break inside the city.

The best time to visit is early morning during the dry season (November to April) when it's cooler and the animals are more active. Avoid midday heat and the heavy June-to-October rains that can turn paths muddy. Expect to pay around 150-300 pesos per person for entry, plus small extra fees if you bring a camera or want to feed certain animals. Food and drinks inside are limited and overpriced, so eat beforehand.

Tip: go straight to the kinder zoo section if you have kids – that's the highlight. Skip the elephant show if it's running; it's usually short, outdated, and not very enriching. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep expectations reasonable. It's an easy half-day detour if you're already in Manila and traveling with children, but not worth a special trip on its own.
